What Brought Me to Honors Environmental Science

Last year, I took Honors Biology, and through some weird circumstances, I had a different teacher each trimester, which made holding onto ideas pretty difficult. When, in the last trimester, I finally made my way into the real bio classroom, I found myself doing really cool labs and projects. In the last trimester, we identified unknown substances and we made hydroponic systems, which are self-sustaining plant systems. It was really cool. My team and I worked really hard on building the structure that would eventually hold about 16 plants. Once we had done this, I got really excited about doing other things like it. Not only was our project really cool–it was functional and environmentally friendly, and it was one of the most satisfying projects I have ever done. First trimester with Will we learned about the Environmental Impact of different species, and I realized that the human impact is pretty outrageous. I've always done little things here and there to help, like turning off lights when I leave a room, recycling, or trying not to waste water, but I've never taken real initiative or gotten to know the problem, so I figure a class like this is the best way to learn more. I'm also really looking forward to doing more lab work and projects like the hydroponic systems.
